The F1 Guys..!!

These people are the F1 key of our company… Those without one, will not be able to function smoothly. So who are these F1 guys?? These guys are professionally called as … Network Engineers! They are also fondly called the ‘Router Freaks’.

They have the busiest of schedules, working tirelessly for the office. But is it worth it? Yes, of course! Why? Being a network engineer is a fun and interesting job since daily, you get the opportunity to deal with new challenges, new updates, new software’s, new techniques of solving computer problems, etc. The most interesting one being, you know for a fact that the office depends on you! If there is no network engineer working in your company, you won’t have a fast network (no network itself for a start!), no maintenance of your systems and no guidance when your system hangs or crash which will hinder the daily progress of your company.

What does a network engineer do at OPSPL? Let me give you a short description of the tasks they handle. First of all, they do ‘remote support’ for our clients, i.e. connect to a computer from their consoles via the Internet and work directly on the clients system from the office, Visit clients who need personal attention, perform in-house tasks like installing updates and anti-virus, checking systems which have crashed or hanged, dealing with blue screens (A support guy’s biggest fear is the ‘BLUE SCREEN’!), and so on. Last but not the least, they provide us with the Internet and server and all the functions with it, like the wireless network, LAN, and so on.

May it be a small matter like a switch not working or a big thing like a system crash; we all need the SUPPORT guys! They know the A to Z about the computer world, and they have to know! With people running to them shouting for ‘Help’, like for literally everything. The networking guys need to be on their toes all the time… So they are! With a smile on their face, they are ever ready to help their colleagues in being productive for the company.

This is why they are fondly called as the ‘F1 Guys’ of the company.

The Fall of Berlin Wall – The Rise of Love and Unity!!

Let us all go back to the year 1961, and picture living in Germany. It’s August 1961, a twelve foot concrete wall stands stark between East Berlin (communist dominated) and west Berlin (Democratic) - dividing families, relations and above all dividing the love and unity.

Now, as long as the gate is locked, as long as this tall wall is allowed to stand, it is not only a question of disunity that remains open, but the question of freedom too. But this question does not have to linger in our heads for a long time as; we are going to take a leap to the year 1989.

Yes, a big leap to 1989, to be precise - November 9, 1989! The year the Berlin wall fell – and along came crashing the hatred, the violence, the in humanity and everything else that divided the love and humanity. It blew a trumpet with the message of hope and non- violence - more than a fall; it was the “RISE” of love, peace and unity.

9th November 2014 will mark the 25th anniversary of ‘The Fall of the Berlin Wall’. To honor this day, a series of events will be held in Germany.

Today, ‘The Fall of the Berlin Wall’ is significant not only for Germany but the entire world – specifically, to us, Indians. When we Indians boast of living in world that is connected socially and economically, why not question ourselves, do a self examination with regards to the way we deal when it comes to peace, unity and humanity? Why don’t we try to break barriers related to these issues? Why we are increasingly divided territorially by walls that stand much stronger and taller than the Berlin wall ever did?

The peaceful revolution at Berlin on November 9, 1989 that lead to reunification is an inspiring notion that freedom and the will of the people can knock down any barriers and lift the iron curtain that divides the world.

To all those out there reading this message, feel it, it is never too late! There is always a chance for a change, do you believe this? If your answer is positive, all you need to do is “be that change”!

Today, let us challenge the strength we have within ourselves, the strength to impact lives, transform our society from within, make a difference, be a change and push political rifts into history.

Remember, any objective can be achieved through a nonviolent struggle!

Finally, how many walls could you as a human being bring down to help your country rise in PEACE, LOVE and UNITY?

Okay! so where do we begin? First, let’s get a basic idea of SEO. What is SEO? It is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization. SEO helps to popularize a website and increase its visibility in the search results of a popular search engine in the unpaid (organic) section.

Why does a website need SEO? Search Engine Optimization’s main aim is to get your particular website on the first page of a search result by showing it more frequently. This benefits the site to get more visitors and more business.

In a nutshell, SEO consists of writing and publishing of blogs/articles/documents of related services on your website, selecting of keywords, writing relevant content on the website, link building, putting of alt tags for images on the site, Meta description, and so on.

What is it like being a SEO specialist at OPSPL? SEO specialists in our office are really cool people to hangout with! Imagine you get paid to do easy and interesting work like this; write creative blogs, interesting content, put up good looking attractive ads on Google AdWords and other mediums, editing images and videos, placing Social Media Marketing ads on facebook, twitter and google+, etc.

Being a SEO specialist myself, I really enjoy my job. I feel it’s a stress-free job. You cannot get bored of it since everyday you get the opportunity to write creative content for your SEO work and edit images and videos and so on. I would never imagine that I would get paid for doing stuff which I loved doing in college. The office environment is fun filled, relaxing, and has a positive vibe. My colleagues are young, full of life, hardworking and dedicated.

I feel you really need to be creative to be a good SEO practitioner, to come up with creative content every single day. It’s the perfect opportunity to boast about your writing skills! You need to be an Internet freak with wide knowledge of the World Wide Web and a also be a good reader. At the end, being a good reader is more important than being a good writer.

Just graduated? Or unhappy with your current job? Five good reasons to consider Online -- Goa - a smart career move.

1. We are the only "Microsoft Certified Partner" developing Microsoft Solutions in Goa.All the rest are just registered partners. There is a huge difference!
**Working on the Microsoft Dev Platform, with a Certified Partner has a huge amount of benefits - for your present and future too.

2. We are one of the few Companies that offer our clients & partners "Total Solutions" on the Microsoft & FOSS (LAMP) Platforms. Being Linux & PostgreSQL listed consultants’ means we are respected in that sphere too.
**What better way to launch your career than working with a Company that is active in both the major development spheres.

3. We are probably the only Company in Goa that does not always "Need experienced candidates"... If you're a smart fresher, willing to learn quickly & have the proper background your studies should have given you - we'll hone your skills to world-class.
**We are not a company of programmers. We have openings for Internet Researchers, System Administrators, Network Engineers, Designers, Documentation Specialists and BackOffice Team members - the whole gamut of posts a "Total Solutions Company" has. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer too.

4. Interested in "Mobile/Hand-held Development"? We develop for the iPhone/iPad, Android and Windows Phone - Mobile Platforms.
**Not many companies do this. Let alone in Goa!

5. Money is not everything! Sure a lot of companies pay more than we do and offer much more attractive-looking packages. But at the end of the day, for your career growth and satisfaction - it's the work you do, the stuff you learn and the amount of exposure you get.
**One reason most people who start with us (when they do) move to other Companies go straight into very senior roles.

**We ARE professionals and MAKE professionals. That's what Online -- Goa is all about.

10 things you probably didn't know about Online Productivity Solutions - or never did ask.

1. We were founded on 7th August 1995. That makes us 20 years old in August 2015.

2. We have the same set of company directors today as on the day we started in 1995. That says something for stability. All our working directors are Goan, live and work in Goa and we have no foreign equity or controlling interests. That speaks volumes for being Goan & Goan technological skills and expertise.

3. We were handling export software projects in the year 1998 - one of the first companies in Goa to be doing so.

4. Between 1995 and 1997 we operated from a tiny office in Margao, between 1997 and 2006 from a slightly bigger office at Porvorim. In 2004, when we decided to shift to our own office; we selected Verna as it is the "Centre-most point in Goa State". Convenient for staff to travel to for work, from anywhere in Goa. That's logic not chance. Visit us sometime. We are situated in Verna village amidst sylvan surroundings and coconut palms. No Mobile towers within 300m radius either. ;-)

5. We developed our first iPhone app (for a partner company) as far back as 2007. Again a first for Goa.

6. We are the first (and only software development) Company in Goa to be Microsoft Gold Certified Partners - Ever. In the New Microsoft Partner scheme - we are again the only Silver Certified Partners. We are the only Microsoft Registered Re-furbisher Company in Goa. Check what that offers... http://www.microsoft.com/refurbishedpcs/

7. Check: http://goa1556.in/apps/ - another first iPhone, Android & Windows Phone apps for a Goan Site/Business. All done by us - 100% Goan! Need apps - contact us - we are #1.

8. We are one of the few companies to be Microsoft Silver certified Partners as well as Listed Linux Consultants. Yes, you can find us in the "Linux consultants pages" on all Linux distros, as well as on the Microsoft partner Site.

9. While we do many one-off jobs for clients in India & abroad the strength of our business model is in the fact that we have partners all over the globe that we do all the work for. In-house from Goa! Our in-house teams work on the latest stuff for partners & their clients in Australia, Europe, US, the Gulf & other parts of India.

10. We employ only Goan candidates, with our ratio of freshers to experienced staff being a stunning 90:10 - Yes! You read that right. We have the guts to take-on smart Goan freshers & make them stars in the IT firmament. Which other Company can boast of that? You think you have what it takes? Humble Wirefighters

At the end of this article, I am sure enough you will be able to figure out who these “Humble Wirefighters” really are. Read through. . .

Not later than 08:30 these guys hit the office, the very first thing they have to do is, (they probably don’t want to, but as said, ‘they have to’: p) check their mail box, and there, the work begins- just the start of the so called tiring day- sigh! The mails just keep pouring in, wonder what goes wrong overnight. :(

And then, they have to Get-Set-Start; start with replying the mails, attending calls and off course looking into the in-office networking issues. It wouldn’t be wrong to call them the “F1” key of the IT firm (hehe…: p). You’ll not be surprised to see them run in and out of the server room, pop their eyes out and stare at the complete black command screen, push their heads inside the CPU and so on.

But I must say, these guys need to have great analyzing powers and yes, yes, the problem solving knack too, undoubtedly, the guys at our office, have it all in abundance. (If they didn’t have these skills, probably I wouldn’t be hitting the keys and writing this article). In other words, all they need to know and figure out is – “how stuff really works”.

They come across various kinds of issues some as tangled as noodles and some as lame as a penguin’s chocolate bar!! But, to agree on the fact, these issues whether big or small, help them in learning new things and building new ideas. (Remember, learning is never ending process???) And the attitude with which they take up that work, ohm…. Seems like, they are going to have a gala time working on it.

According to me, the work environment also matters, working for a small firm will make you think the job is pretty easy, but if you have to work for a large firm, which has its clients spread over a wide geographical area, things can get a little tedious, but, but, but, hold on, this doesn’t stop the guys at our office from fulfilling their duties, they do complete justice to it, and yes, may be one of the reasons being - the environment – one of a kind- simply pleasant.

I believe the guys here completely believe and follow the great words penned down by Steve Jobs, which says –“our work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” I say this because, even after working for a whole long day, they feel they haven’t worked an hour (yeah... that’s surprising; probably they are ‘Being Humble’ :) ).

By the way, did you get who this article is talking about?? Yes, they are the System Administrators!

Are you interested in a career in networking???

SUPPORT GUYS….. OUR HEROES

Our office will literally remain shut if the support guys do not show up…..and I am not kidding. Support guys are the first people to enter and last people to leave the office because they have to lock and unlock the doors everyday. :P :P :P

They start their day with a cup of coffee in one hand and phone in the other, eyes on the computer screen, checking the mails and fixing the issues. I sometimes wonder how big the issue is because every time I see them, they are always on the phone. They are the most multitasking and passionate bunch of people I have ever seen in my life.a

They are always ready to tackle any kind of networking problem when someone from the office shouts F1…F1…F1 (help). They are basically like saviours... with their positive vibe…and energetic mindset solve any kind of system issue with a big smile on the face. No matter how screwed the problem is… they always have a solution to it. They are like the connecting wires of the entire office.

In spite of having the burden of doing the most complicated job in the world, support guys have the coolest attitude. They are the most fun people to be around. They set a great example on how to have fun while working. I doubt whether I’ll be ever able to enjoy as well as work so much without complaining even once.

Support guys are the driving force of the office. Without them I can never imagine our office running smoothly. If you ever ask me who inspires me most in the office???. My answer is definitely going to be the people with the toughest job and the most amazing attitude…yes the “SUPPORT GUYS….. OUR HEROES”. :) :) :)

My first ever job!!!! SEO for a real live website.

What better way to start my professional life with doing the thing, which interests me the most. In spite of being an electronics engineer, I am bit of internet freak and can spend hours doing research on the net. So the best suited job for me was something related to the net.

Luckily, I got a job of my dream. With lot of excitement and nervousness, I joined OPSPL as a SEO specialist . Excitement because I finally got a job in the field which I wanted and nervousness because I had no clue about what SEO was all about.

My first task was to do SEO for a book publishing website, Goa 1556. I did not even have slightest idea on how to go about. Fortunately my Director and seniors were very cooperative. They were not at all annoyed if I asked them hundreds of questions. Calmly they cleared all my doubts.

With confidence, I started with the first basic step of SEO, i.e, to run an SEO checkup report. Oh my gosh!!! The SEO score for the website was very less, only 21/100. I took up the challenge to improve the score in the time span of two weeks.

I caught hold of a programmer and a QA and made them work along with me to enhance the ranking of the website. Everyday while working I got to learn something new and interesting. At the end of each day, I left the office, satisfied with the work that I had learnt and done.

It is absolutely true that “Time passes by fast when you start doing things which you love”. I experienced this while doing SEO. Without my realization, two weeks deadline was about to get over.

I again ran a SEO checkup report. Looking at the results I was over the moon. The score was improved to 62/100. Quite happy with my work, I showed the results to my Director. Sir complimented my work by saying “good job Shambhavi” and my day just got better.

Now its been more than a month for me in the office and I feel very confident and proud to be a SEO specialist.

Why I Want to do S.E.O.?

Why I want to do S.E.O.? The moment my director gave me this topic to write for a blog I was all excited to write a huge article. Just keeping in mind that I would get to impress him using some of the writing skills which I possess. (That is obvious, I am just a beginner).

Frankly speaking there are a numerous fields to choose from for a fresher like me. But somehow I force myself the question, ‘Why only S.E.O.?’. That makes me ponder on the question in the deeper sense.

So, I put my all my fears aside of being a fresher, try being bold and think from my heart the real reason I am in this company as a S.E.O practitioner. Not fearing the outcome. (which is supposedly this article).

To start with, I joined this company with minimum knowledge of Search Engine Optimization (S.E.O.). Just mugging up information available on the Internet. But now as time passes and sense prevails I am slowly understanding the topic and actually learning it!

I feel S.E.O. is a must for upcoming organizations so that they can redeem themselves with new ideas and a breath of freshness and not get over-shadowed by the so called “rich companies”. Therefore no better way to announce your company, than the World Wide Web!

S.E.O. basically helps improving your site’s visibility on the Internet by getting it noticed by the popular search engines, using particular keywords, enhancing its content, etc.

Being a S.E.O. specialist I would get the opportunity to boast about my writing skills and also get to express my creativity and imaginations (I guess you know this by now). The plus point being I would love doing this for a good cause!

Someday I want to be famous and someone to look up to, but for the right reasons. I would like to wind up by saying a phrase that is stuck in my mind for sometime now. And possibly might be my future mission, ‘Creativity... with a cause!’

GOA 1556 – The birth of a simple website for an interesting concept.

Goa 1556
Goa 1556 is run by journalist Frederick Noronha with the aim to democratise the production of knowledge. Goa 1556's main goal is to create space and lend voices to Goan authors.

Frederick Noronha approached us to create a website for Goa 1556 along with mobile apps for android, iPhone and windows mobiles - so that it gets global visibility and people can also know about the rich and varied Goa literature available.

OPSPL created a wordpress website for him so that all the information on the different books available in print and changes could be put-up for the world to see. Initially managed by us, the website was later taken up by Frederick.

Nowadays people prefer shopping online to save time in this fast moving world, so we added a “Pay-by PayPal” option. For user convenience we also provided a mail enquiry button so that site visitors, interested in Goa Books can easily dash-off-an-email and ask Frederick queries about a particular book(s).

At present Goa 1556 has 73 listed (and available to buy) books and many more to come.

Check out the site and the fantastic range of “exclusively Goa and Goan” books at: http://goa1556.in/

World Stray Animals Day

“April 4th is intended to be a day of compassion, concern and action for all stray animals in the world.”

4/4 is World Stray Animals Day. This day is already being celebrated in more than 60 countries. It is a day to give special attention to the 600,000,000 stray animals all over the world, to show compassion, deploy initiatives to care, and get into action for them.
Every year millions of stray dogs, cats, horses and donkeys fend for themselves in terrible conditions, often being pursued, abused and killed by authorities and communities. Most of us live in countries where there are many stray animals being killed every year because they have no home, yet breeders produce and sell animals to the pet industry.

Think about and talk to friends and family about the benefits of adopting animals from government shelters and rescue networks. Donate to worthy animal shelters. It saves lives, saves people having to kill and it gives these precious beings shelter and protection – the causes of long and healthy lives to come!

World Strays Animal Day's official Facebook page has over 5,000 Likes and over 1,000 people talking about it as of 12 am on April 4, 2012. Awareness and action is the key to controlling the homeless animal population and placing them into loving, safe homes.

In order to help the Stray Animals, you can visit: http://gawt.org/  or   http://pfagoa.org/a/

Herding Cats Ain’t so bad! ;) -- Diary of a Project Co-ordinator..

Well! To start with, writing a blog is seriously the last thing I thought I would possibly be doing. But when I was asked to write about my experience in OPSPL, I was head over heels & all ready to scream out and share my thoughts with others. :P

I wouldn't hesitate the slightest bit in saying "I just love my job!"

My previous job profile was of an Associate Software Engineer where I had to do software testing & communicating with clients. And hence, when I was asked to join OPSPL as a Project Co-ordinator, I feared I wouldn’t be able to meet their expectations.

But, as days passed by, I learnt more and more and grew in experience. I got to handle various intriguing tasks with each passing day.

Most of us are under the impression that there's nothing much to do as a Project Co-ordinator; and they are just a bunch of crazy people running around trying to get updates from everyone. Who knows what they do with all that information, right?

Yes! Of course! It’s something very easy to do… Just as simple as Herding Cats!! ;)

Well! Here's a short summary of some of the tasks we handle. My day starts by checking emails from various clients, taking updates from all developers on the projects in hand, followed by updating our Project Head on the current status of the same.Next comes the responsibility of having the team meeting on the upcoming and present projects which involves assigning tasks, structuring work plans and timelines, communicating with all people who are involved in the project, quality assurance testing, checking task logs, ensuring the task is completed in time in the most appropriate manner possible, deadlines, documenting work requirements etc.

Not to forget, all the client calls and meetings which sometimes even go on for the entire day!

Well, that's not all! When the developers are stuck with a issue in the software, we sit down breaking our heads till we get a solution, to fix the same. But of course, if we are still unable to solve the same, we have our Project Head who’s always at our rescue! He's like a perfect guide.

Sometimes our project deadline gets closer and our work is not complete. In such situations, I wait back with my team even after work hours to finish up all the assigned work; before we hit the deadline - because upsetting the client is something we are definitely not into. All said and done -  even after a day of hectic work, we know how to make the best out of it. On our way back home we make sure to hit the "Ras omlette" shop and celebrate our achievement!

Trust me! The feeling is way better that sitting on the fancy seat & gulping down a chunky piece of chicken at a fancy restaurant. :)

I would like to wind up by saying, there's nothing that I've regretted about ever since I joined as a Project Co-ordinator. The leaning experience is amazing. And each day I leave with the thought that "I have achieved something today".
