Breed Of Testers -- Part 2

Hi its the Social Media Girl for OPSPL. Well I hadn't posted anything in the OPSPL Diaries for sometime now. Maybe I wasn't inspired enough, but as I was going through a few random blogs I came across one that was called "The breed of Testers" by Minion. Hence thought of posting a Part 2 for the same. This time its from Online -- Goa. Enjoy :)

THE COMEDIAN

The Comedian regularly carries a cheerful approach to testing. They are grinding away at work to do a good job, yet they are also here to have a touch of fun. The Comedian is an amusing sort of fella who will always have a joke and a laugh even when every one else is worried about deadlines. In the wake of pulling a 14 hour shift the Comedian is still in top form. I mean joke wise at any rate. The Comedian frequently makes awesomely funny test data and artifacts. The Comedian's defect reports, in spite of the fact that they are fairly accurate, have been known to make designers cry with laughter. Now and again however, the Comedian can seem to fail to offer the professionalism and maturity to move through the testing ranks and be regarded with respect by different departments. The Comedian's principle objective is to have a fabulous time at work and make the working environment a fun place. Despite the reality that they can sometimes be pretty annoying, particularly after the 100th practical joke including elastic creepy crawlies and a camera, you can't deny their methodology to work is very refreshing.

THE MAGICIAN

Very often called Forrest Gump as they generally have all the earmarks of being in the right place at the right time. They try to test an application that has already been tried vigorously and quickly discover a masterpiece or a masterproblem. Each bit of programming they touch, they discover a deformity in it almost immediately. Each tester sometime or another has a short however otherworldly spell as the Magician yet a few testers have the ability to do it at all time. Its only a problem when the Magician ill-uses their powers through the following ways:

1. They get pompous and hold showing off sessions. This can prompt hate and constant irritation.

2. They utilize their magician skills to cover up coding defects and vanish all evidence of poor execution. The truth soon comes out.

3. They transform their team into farm animals. Despite the fact that its funny, it is frequently seen as misusing power.

4. Wearing preposterous magician outfits and pointy caps. Neither man nor woman nor the farm animals likes extravagant dress. It's on occasion like this when the Magician is stripped off of their energy and downgraded to that of human tester.

A Magician is never late either. They arrive exactly when they intend to.
Furthermore in spite of the fact that most of us have to accept that we have minimal control over if we can turn into a magician or not there are a few steps all testers could be doing to take a shot at being the Magician. They are:

1. Read everything you can about the subject

2. Have an yearning to study

3. Practice, practice, practice And assuming that you go about doing this, then one day perhaps you too could turn into a magician.

THE NITPICKER

The Nitpicker takes more time to test than generally most testers, they are known to raise a tremendous amount of imperfections of which just 1% are certified bugs. The Nitpicker raises hell for everything that isn't archived, regardless of the fact that it works and makes sense. They utilize the medium of defects to make conversations with whatever is left of the team. They frequently raise numerous examples of one bug, regularly with the sole point of raising their bug count. They sit down to test, cross reference each bit of documentation and make flawlessly definite bug reports. On the plus side, they are amazingly careful. The Nitpicker is not responsive to change however. The Nitpicker needs everything to be recorded and each change to be carefully written down. Any discussion that happens needs a signed paper follow up of all agreed details. Change controls unnerve the Nitpicker. Missing documentation is a Nitpickers most certified bad dream. The Nitpicker regularly invests a great deal of time handling cross reference reports and networks that on the surface appear functional yet wind up using more time and money. The Nitpicker accepts a standard set of metrics ought to be applied to all test projects. The Nitpicker adores Best Practices. Frequently the Nitpicker keeps tabs on the things that don't make a difference and constantly frets until the farm animals get back. Working with a Nitpicker is a test. They require a consistent flow of documentation as well as frequently decline to begin work until the documentation is triplicated under the false conviction that testing can't begin until a agreed date. They require quietness, time and paperwork and this frequently is just too much for the rest of the testers to handle.

Ninja Kicking myths about Social Media Marketing

Yes I am a Social Media Person.
No I don’t just get paid to be on Facebook.
Yes I am wearing a Ninja outfit.

Myth : It’s Easy and can be completed in an hour!

Ya right, this is the biggest myth of all. If this were true I would be out on the road before you could say Burger! Why burger? Well lets not deviate from the topic. It needs a lot of quickness and agility. A successful accomplishment of social media might expect following things from you:
  • Convert artistic excellence into content excellence.
  • Create multiple variety of content on multiple networks.
  • Control the method of sharing content of many people in same organization.
  • Media optimization.
  • Responsive social media.
  • Keep a Check on which strategies worked and which didn't.

Social media can’t be scaled easily; it needs skillful and agile process for successful venture marketing.

Myth : Managing it… is Free!

Creating relevant content which is optimized and then posting and circulating it on multiple networks, needs a lot of time and patience. The free managing tools that are offered for this method however aren't adequate. Hence, social media marketing needs an expert who is nimble, intelligent and fully fledged for managing information flare-ups.

*Taking a bow*

Premium tools for modifying and controlling social media aren't free. Commenting and posting on Facebook  twitter, etc. might not cost any penny, however sustaining it entails commitment (money) and progressive approach. So if you still think some tools are free that doesn't mean that social media itself is free platform!

Myth : Social Media= Facebook!

If you think its solely Facebook that does all the social media effectively, then you're highly mistaken!

It’s terribly essential to grasp the importance of every social networking site; because it might have a secret ingredient to serve for various purpose. If you're B2B enterprise then you ought to choose LinkedIn, because it is one among the quickest growing social networks. Twitter on the opposite hand, will assist you in building targeted group which is pricey and slow with Facebook.

Even though Facebook dominates its other competitors by nearly one billion users, it still doesn't mean that it's the sole web site to think about for social media promoting.

Myth: Create Social Networking Site And We Are Sorted!

Social networking websites on their own cannot serve you the purpose of successful marketing. There ought to be communicable and catching content on your web site and blogs such that individuals finds it fascinating enough to share and like and comment on it. The content here plays very important role in establishing your brand recognition.
There are varied other factors, that are thought of as essential as building contacts and clients on social networking sites. you must hunt for following aspects while doing social networking for your business:
  • Implement traditional media techniques like email campaigns, newspaper ads etc
  • Must do SEO
  • Create contagious content for contagious followers
  • If you can’t, hire an expert (Sole Purpose of my existence!)

Social media is an important a part of your marketing strategy, however not the sole one. In fact, this works even higher if pooled with different marketing services, particularly email marketing. Hence, by overcoming these misconceptions regarding social media you'll surely augment your return on investment.

Network Engineer / Don't care why the upgrade is making your computer slow guy

A network engineer is the hard labor guy of the IT world. He handles all the “Plumbing Work” for the company’s computers. You will usually find him creeping around the shadows of the server room, connecting offices with T1 lines, then hooking them up to the internet and the tedious process of configuring all internal systems such as net routers and firewalls.

The position of a network engineer usually spills over into some UNIX systems administration work, but practically, it’s a plumbing job. Getting a start up company with a small staff and only one location configured is a pretty easy network design job. But if you work for a larger established firm with offices everywhere, the network is incredibly complicated with tiers and tiers of network engineers.

A network engineer needs to know how to use some basic network devices like “packet sniffers”. It’s a ‘noodly’ job which doesn’t utilize a lot of tools; you have to be able to think your way through problems and understand how stuff works. You may not actually spend a lot of time typing, but rather in front of white boards (like a chalk board you write on with markers) drawing pictures to visualize your solutions.

A typical day demands typical hours, but in the life of a network engineer actual work begins off-hours when they’re tinkering with something, because it might interrupt the systems while others work. These nocturnal creatures often arrive around 10 or 11 a.m., but they’re usually there until 7, 8 or 9 p.m. And most likely they’re always on call. Networking is a world in itself which is utterly fascinatingly glamorous to people in the field.

Techie Jargons

Today we thought we’d share some of the tech jargon we use out here at Online -- Goa

Bombastic Report
This could very well be called a smug report or a pompous report but I just love the word Bombastic. Is the Shaggy song Mr. Boombastic playing in your head yet? Coming back to the report, a bombastic report is a bug that is submitted by a snob who thinks he / she knows a lot about the design and is worldly wise enough to make irrelevant technical suggestions which he / she thinks is causing a problem.

Also see

High on Crack report: A report so completely in comprehensible that the person who submitted it must have been smoking pot.

Don’t know Don’t care report: A report usually with no information other than the phrase “ doesn't work.”

A Sitting Duck

All of us have those moments when we go to present our product that we know is as perfect as the almighty itself. But then the clients who feel they know better start pointing out changes because they feel if they don’t then they aren't adding value. So we add a sitting duck – A feature included to the design to draw attention and be removed, thus avoiding changes to the rest of the product.

Onion Code

As many of you might have already figured out. This is a code with too many layers. Here as you dive into the code, every layer has to be pushed on to the memory stack which may form abstraction and cause the user to cry sulpher tears.

Shhushhh Comments
Also known as the Ninja comments, invisible comments, secret comments, or no comments.

Mad Girlfriend Bug
You know there is something going on but the software tells you everything is fine.

QA testers – You hate us and we know it!

We don’t blame the programmers for hating us, I mean our appraisals are done by the amount of threatening notes we get by our fellow colleagues (at least that is what I would like to think). I will tell you why? You see our job is to be as mean as we can to the application we get. We have to break it in every way so that when the client finally gets it, the application doesn't behave badly no matter what. My life as a QA tester requires me to find bugs and errors in the code, document the same and send it to the programmers to fix (now you understand the threatening notes). Finding bugs isn't easy, it’s a tedious process and we have to follow a billion step test plan to see if we can cause an error. Once we get an error we have to write a report on what the error is and what we did to get it. And the process goes on and on following the endless test plan.

So whenever you buy any application you can thank us the QA testers that sold our souls so that the app you bought would work without freezing up on you. And if it does break, don’t get too upset because sometimes the users or our clients are able to do things that are not even mentioned in our billion step test plan (It’s nothing to be proud about). All there is know is we the QA testers—Santa’s little helpers of the IT world are the ones that are responsible for getting your app as close to perfect as possible.

Intern stories at OPSPL

I can say that I am moody at times especially when it comes to repetitive tasks. Most people see me glued to the laptop at my work station with some 50 different tabs opened up at one go. Today was one of those days with endless directory submissions, same old blog posts, same old articles and same old comments. It does get monotonously frustrating. But then something changed...

I got a mail. Don’t get me wrong I usually get a lot of newsletters, and subscription mails. But this was different. It was a comment on a thread I had started for a client. I had started a thread on a forum about some helpful tips offered by our clients business. The comment was a simple thank you note, my post helped someone in some part of the world and the person thanked me. I know its not a lot, but it just made me realize that every business, every service offered helps someone out there, and I help them connect.

It reminds me of a story one of the US presidents walking into NASA and asking a cleaning operative what his job entailed.  The man answered that he helped put a man on the moon. I may be an Intern right now but I know I play an important part. I connect people. Well one thing for sure is that it did change my mood to a more upbeat note.

For my readers out there if you do have an office story feel free to share them here.

Life of an SEO / Social Media Intern

Hello my name is Vanessa, and I am an SEO / Social Media intern at Online -- Goa.  My day starts with hitting the snooze button the fifth time before finally waking up and dashing through my morning chores. I wait for my car pool buddies to pick me up after incessantly calling them to know their whereabouts.

I reach the office by 9:30 am and the first thing I do is run for my cup of coffee to get my creative juices flowing. I start my work by first checking my mails. Nothing new today other than a few SEO related links sent for reference by our Director. I check the ranking of the page I am currently working on, its up by 5 %. In my head I am dancing like an oompa loompa. I show off
around a bit until I get bogged down with more work (serves me right for showing off).

Honestly though I don’t mind it, I love my job. My company treats me like family and however nerdy it may sound I love being here.

For a couple more hours I do some link building, posting on blogs (praying and hoping that all the generous bloggers out there don’t moderate my post) I try and make my posts interesting and helpful. I write a few blogs for my projects, get them approved for publishing.

The rumbling in my stomach tells me that it’s time for lunch and so I peel myself off from my screen and grab a sandwich or whatever my colleagues have got for me today. After lunch I meet with the designer and discuss about the content for website of another client. Then comes my favorite part blogging and social media networking. Here I research on related interesting content for our clients social networking pages. Every like or share of my content gets my pulse racing.
New strategies are made, goals are realized and knuckles are cracked. Reports are generated in the background while designs and content are tweaked in the foreground. Its 7 pm and the end of the day draws near; project tasks are updated and notes are shorthanded in the continuous life cycle of an SEO-That’s me!

A day in a life of a Programmer

Ever have one of those days where your eyes are sore and body is completely exhausted. But just then an idea hits and your mind is racing.” Should I turn on the laptop? Or Should I just wait till the next morning?”. In a programmers life it doesn't matter if it’s the day or the night.

Tonight its just one of those moments where I wished I could do an all nighter without winding up in a hospital. My mind is running at 1 GBPS speed while my body is saying Byte me. The blinking light from the laptop puts me in a siren like trance, slowly calling me towards it. I muster enough will power to shut it down. Then the Smartphone next to me beeps with the latest updates from code developers. Some poor soul in trouble with a code in some part of the world.

With thoughts like this sleep is the last thing I am going to do. I am pretty sure this is going to render me completely useless at work tomorrow. Nothing few cartons of Red bull can’t help. By now I am pretty sure my body is 50 % redbull and the rest water and other mushy stuff.

I start counting sheep, drink some milk, repeat it in the hopes that soon dear sandman would stop by.. But its pointless so since I tried everything I could, I give in. I open up my laptop and start working on that widget while sorting a few bugs out.

I don’t know what time I slept but I made it. And the next day woke up groggily to begin a new day at the office with the love of my life. I  am not kidding when I say I love coding. But that being said, I know I need to prioritize the essentials need in life, mainly sleep. I say to myself that today I am going to set a schedule for myself.  Set time for gym, reading, movies and other things I would like myself to be doing. One thing that consoles me and I know for sure is that.
I AM NOT ALONE!
